Los Angeles launches campaign to recycle trees

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) — Los Angeles city officials launched a campaign on Saturday to recycle Christmas trees in the hope of keeping aging Christmas trees out of landfills.

The city set up 28 city-operated tree recycling centers which begin operation Saturday.

City officials said they expected the campaign to raise people’ s awareness to protect the environment, in addition to recycling the trees.

The city recycles 70,000 to 80,000 trees annually as part of the recycling program, which started in 1992, according to the Los Angeles Department of Public Works.

There are two ways Los Angeles residents can dispose of their trees.

Residents can recycle from home by removing ornaments, cutting the tree into several pieces and putting the timber in green recycling bins.

People can also drop off their trees at one of the 28 city- operated tree recycling sites. Participants will receive a pine tree seedling, an energy-efficient light bulb and a coupon for a free 20- pound bag of mulch.
