Salmon, Steelhead and Trout Issues Are Highlighted at Daylong Seminar

Jan. 11–People interested in salmon, steelhead and trout can see presentations and programs and visit booths from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Boise State University.

The event is sponsored by Idaho Steelhead and Salmon Unlimited and Trout Unlimited. Admission is $5. Free parking will be available behind the Student Union Building and at the Bronco Stadium parking lot.

Programs will run concurrently in two different rooms.

9 a.m.

–Local fishing guide Dave Tucker will talk about steelhead fly fishing and Spey casting in the Northwest.

–Matt Woodard of Trout Unlimited will report on the latest trends in the South Fork River fishery.

10 a.m.

–Dan Hurzler of fin-chasers.com will present tying patterns for steelhead fishing.

–Steelhead guide Brent Sawyer will offer a beginner’s guide steelhead fishing.

11 a.m.

–Roger Phillips, outdoors writer for the Idaho Statesman, will present a show on how to take good fishing photographs.

–Scott Grunder from Idaho Department of Fish and Game will present F&G’s latest survey findings from Idaho anglers.

Noon

–Drift-boat fishing for steelhead. Guide Norm Klobetanz of Riggins will present techniques used by the steelhead guides.

–Matt Woodard will repeat his 9 a.m. presentation.

1 p.m.

–Spey Rod 101 and steelheading the Salmon near North Fork. Lee Davison with CND Spey Underground will present an overview.

–Steve Trafton of the Henrys Fork Foundation will provide an overview of the fishery at Henrys Fork.

2 p.m.

–Why Wild Salmon? History, status and trends in chinook salmon. Russ Thurow presents research findings from the Middle Fork Salmon River.

–John Robison and James Piotrowski will present the latest on the proposed Atlanta gold mine.

2:45 p.m.

–Clayne Baker and Kyle Letterlie of the Boise Valley Wooly Buggers will tell how to get kids into fishing.

–Protecting Resident Native Trout: A Case For A National Refuge System. Rick Williams will discuss the need for native fish refuges to help conserve and protect native fish populations.

3:30 p.m.

–Salmon recovery and 10-year anniversary of the 1997 Idaho Statesman editorial calling for breaching the Lower Snake River dams. A panel discussion.
