Advocates of Md. Smoking Ban Rally

Advocates of a statewide ban on smoking in bars and restaurants rallied in front of the Maryland statehouse Thursday.
Leading Maryland lawmakers say there is growing momentum for a state law, fueled by the increasing number of ordinances passed by counties and towns.
It's something that's destined to pass, House Speaker Michael E. Busch told the Baltimore Sun.
Four counties have local bans and two subdivisions -- Anne Arundel County, which includes the state capital, Annapolis, and the city of Baltimore -- are considering them.
The rally included union leaders, restaurant employees, legislators, anti-smoking activists and religious leaders.
Past efforts to adopt a statewide law have died in committee. The proposal is opposed by the Restaurant Association of Maryland and some other groups.
Gov.-elect Martin O'Malley opposed a city ban when he was mayor of Baltimore on the grounds that the city would lose business to the suburbs. Some opponents of a state law argue it is not needed because local governments are taking action.
