MOSCOW. Aug 18 (Interfax) - The death rate among Russia's working population is up to 350% higher than that in developed countries and 50% higher than in developing ones, according to a draft program on improving the health of the working population in Russia for 2004- 2015.
"According to the State Statistics Committee information, the general population has shrunk by over 5 million people and the working population by over 12 million people in the past 12 years, that is, the working-age population is decreasing faster than the population on the whole. The death rate among the [Russian] working population is 350% higher than that in the European Union," reads the draft document.
The annual number of deaths in Russia is nearly 1 million higher than the number of births.
The Economic Development and Trade Ministry expects the trend towards the shrinkage of the working population in Russia to continue, and Russia could lose over 10 million working-age people in 2006-2015, or roughly 1 million per year.
"According to a long term forecast, the country's population will decrease by half in the next 60 years," it says.
