CHAPPAQUA, N.Y., Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- This fall, more than 600,000 educators per month will be presented with "Show Biz Science," activities, experiments and -- can-you-believe-it? -- facts from science educator extraordinaire, Vicki Cobb.
With her theater-themed column and a forthcoming message board section representing a major launch by Education World.com, Ms. Cobb is prepared to kick step her way through science, showing teachers how to shake up the curriculum and get kids engaged. See http://www.educationworld.com/showbizscience.shtml.
"Science is play for kids. The problem is that teachers feel ill-equipped to teach it," says Cobb, whose column debut comes just in advance of the fourth book in her award-winning Science Play series, I Fall Down (HarperCollins) which will be in bookstores in October.
Science is full of surprises and Vicki Cobb has a magician's touch for pulling fun out of thin air. In the course of 85 books, she's linked science to math, art, music and food. It is the discipline that works across the curriculum, but gets short shrift compared with math and reading.
Cobb says this is about to change because testing is on the horizon. By 2007, the No Child Left Behind law will mandate testing at the elementary, middle and high school levels.
According to Gary Hopkins, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Education World.com, "The science phobias and failures many teachers suffered as students themselves lead them to shy away from teaching science at all. In 'Show-Biz Science,' we've created a science teaching resource for all teachers - especially for those who feel uncomfortable teaching science content. And, after looking for a long time, we've found in Vicki Cobb the perfect person to create that feature."
