Cuban Immigrants Land in So. Florida
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has taken custody of 27 Cuban immigrants who landed on an island near Key Biscayne, Fla.
The boatload landed on Boca Chita, 16 miles south of Key Biscayne, at about 6 a.m. Saturday, the Miami Herald reported. Under the government’s wet foot, dry foot policy, they will be allowed to remain in the United States.
Earlier this month, 91 would-be immigrants intercepted at sea were returned to Cuba.
The Coast Guard, and its Department of Homeland Security partners, reiterate our important message that attempts to illegally enter the (United States) from the sea are inherently dangerous and have resulted in serious injury and death, said Howard White, assistant chief of law enforcement in the 7th Coast Guard District.
