Stunned Sea Turtles Rescued in Texas

Posted on: Sunday, 21 January 2007, 18:00 CST

A conservation group says it has rescued more than 42 cold-stunned green sea turtles over the last three days from the South Padre Island, Texas, beaches.

The turtles have a form of hypothermia -- referred to as cold-stunned due to the air temperature in the area dropping into the 30s for almost two days, causing the water temperature to drop 15 degrees as well, reported the Sea Turtle Inc. Web site.

The group said it would not have been able to mount the rescue without countless volunteers, local and national media and financial contributions, Sea Turtle Inc.

Due to limited space, 26 of the turtles had to be transferred to the University of Texas Pan American Coastal Studies Lab under the direction of Dr. Miguel Nevarez.
