Rescue Ship Beached
January 21, 2007
ANTI-POLLUTION teams were on standby yesterday after a ship carrying potentially dangerous chemicals was beached a mile off the South Devon coast.
The Napoli, from which 26 crew members were airlifted to safety on Thursday, was towed onto a sandbank off Branscombe because of fears it might sink in worsening conditions. The 62,000-tonne vessel has 2,394 containers, with a ‘small proportion’ holding industrial and agricultural chemicals.
Robin Middleton of the Department of Transport said: ‘I’m confident that there will be no pollution from the cargo.’
