Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran Wins 2006 BE Award
Map World Forum–Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP), the water and sewer utility serving India’s western state of Maharashtra, has won a 2006 BE Award in the “Geospatial: Public Works” category for its use of Bentley software to help develop a disaster mitigation plan. The software saved MJP approximately one year in design cycle time and about $2 million in costs.
The BE Awards of Excellence, which are judged by an independent panel of industry experts and presented at an evening ceremony during the annual BE Conference (www.be.org), honor the extraordinary work of Bentley users improving the world’s infrastructure. These projects set benchmarks for their industries and showcase the imagination and technical mastery of the organizations that created them.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Area has a population of 17 million spread across an area of 4355 square kilometers (or more than one million acres). Drinking water to the region’s 20 cities is provided by 14 independent water works. After monsoon rains and massive flooding in July of 2005 caused severe water supply disruptions in portions of Mumbai, MJP was asked to study the feasibility of interconnecting all 14 water networks. Through an integrated water network, MJP could provide alternative water supplies to any area impacted by storm damage to one or more water works.
MJP used Bentley’s WaterCAD, Darwin Calibrator, Darwin Designer, and SewerCAD products to model the region’s water networks and help it consider its connection options. Said Sanjay Dahasahasra, chief engineer for MJP, “Bentley’s user-friendly water distribution modeling software allowed us to analyze various combinations of water grids easily and with a high degree of accuracy. Moreover, WaterCAD helped us understand likely risks in the water supply system, and presented us with remedial measures to make sure the region’s 17 million residents always have an adequate supply of potable water.”
The project consisted of importing AutoCAD maps of the Mumbai region, ASCII-formatted databases, and Excel spreadsheets into the WaterCAD application and then using WaterCAD to:
Convert polylines to water pipelines
Produce steady-state and extended time simulations of water distribution grids for different combinations of interlinked networks
Prepare 3D pressure contours
At the completion of the project, MJP delivered a detailed report on actions to be taken in the event of a future disaster. The solutions presented will ensure that the population of the greater Mumbai area will have continuity of water supply even in the event of a major disaster.
