Beach Tennis USA Set to Kick Off 2007 National Tour

NEW YORK, Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Beach Tennis USA will kick off its 2007 National Tour at the Delray Beach Open in Delray Beach, Florida, March 16-17. The two-day event, which will coincide with the Delray Beach Film Festival, is the first stop of a seven-city tour that will include pro tournaments in Miami, Southern California and Long Island, New York.
Beach tennis, which was launched in the U.S. as a pro and recreational sport in 2005 by real estate developer Marc Altheim, is a true hybrid sport that combines tennis and beach volleyball into one exciting and fast-paced game. Played on a regulation beach volleyball court, two players on each team use standard tennis rackets to hit a depressurized tennis ball back and forth over the net without letting it bounce.
At last year's Delray Beach Open, local talent dominated as Jamal Adderly and Victor Dias, both of Delray Beach, defeated Mike Ramirez (Miami) and Rick Simeon (Hollywood) by a score of 8-3 to win the Men's Pro division. In the Women's Pro division, Priscilla Dias and Diana Bovea, of Delray Beach, took home the first-place trophy by winning all their matches.
"Beach Tennis is one the world's most exciting new sports and we are thrilled to be a host city," said Delray Beach Mayor, Jeff Perlman. "Beach Tennis does a great job of creating a fun event that is thrilling to watch and we look forward to a long relationship with this great sport."
The sport of beach tennis has been well embraced by Palm Beach County racquet enthusiasts, as well as first-time players. More than 2,000 participants and fans are expected to turn out for the event. Friday, March 16, there will be free instructional and open play for Delray Beach Film Festival attendees, while the pro tournament will take place on Saturday, March 17.
