Tracing Stream Through Past, Present: Kayaderosseras Creek Exhibit Will Examine Its History, Impact on Watershed

Jan. 26–SARATOGA SPRINGS — Twisting and winding down from Corinth to its mouth at Saratoga Lake in the city, the Kayaderosseras Creek flows through the history of Saratoga County.
The Saratoga Springs History Museum at the Canfield Casino in Congress Park is mounting an exhibit to tell the story of the creek and its impact on the city and surrounding areas.
“A rather picturesque translation of Kayaderosseras is ‘beautiful land of the winding river,’ ” said Libby Smith-Holmes, the volunteer curator for the exhibit.
“The mission of the exhibit is to tell the natural and human history of the Kayaderosseras Creek and the land that it drains,” said Smith-Holmes, a trustee of the museum and Conservation Committee chairwoman of the Friends of the Kayaderosseras.
The creek is 38 miles long. It rises in the Kayaderosseras Range and flows south from South Corinth to Saratoga Lake.
Along the way, it is fed by 29 streams draining 244 square miles in the towns of Ballston, Corinth, Galway, Greenfield, Malta, Milton, Providence and Wilton and the city of Saratoga Springs.
“Everything we do in the city, whether it’s in 2007 or in 1807, has an impact on the stream,” said James Parillo, the museum’s executive director.
The exhibit, “Along the Winding River: A Natural and Human History of the Kayaderosseras Creek Watershed” will open Feb. 3 and run through Dec. 31.
Smith-Holmes is putting the exhibit together, drawing on her experience with the Friends of the Kayaderosseras and resources provided by other groups. She’s been assisted by Meredith Landry of Glenville, a senior at Union College majoring in biology and minoring in history.
The exhibit touches upon the manufacturing history of mills along the creek when water power was important.
The developing recreation uses and the environmental impacts also will be depicted. Kenneth C. Crowe II can be reached at 581-8438 or by e-mail at kcrowe@timesunion.com.
