Proceeds of Telethon Today to Help Animals in Shelter

The Humane Society of Southern Arizona will hold a telethon today to raise money to help the more than 13,000 animals the shelter expects to see in the next year.
The "Be Someone's Champion" telethon will air on KGUN, Channel 9, from noon to 3 p.m. and will feature programming detailing the role of the shelter in Southern Arizona, said Jill Wohlfeil, community relations manager of the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.
Wohlfeil said the telethon is important because the Humane Society receives no outside funding, and has to rely on fund raising and fees for services such as spaying and neutering.
"If we don't raise money, we can't stay open," she said.
Wohlfeil encouraged all pet-lovers to pledge whatever they can to help the organization.
In addition to the telethon, the society will be hosting several activities at Wild Oats Market, 7133 N. Oracle Road, including dog grooming services provided by Park 'n Bark Dog Wash.
Organizers are asking for a $5 donation for grooming small dogs and a $10 donation for larger dogs.
All proceeds will go to the Humane Society, said Jennifer Marek- Lyman, owner of Park 'n Bark Dog Wash.
The Humane Society will also be collecting pet food donations at the site.
The shelter charges $80 for dog and cat adoptions, $95 for kittens and puppies, $135 for purebred dogs.
Anyone adopting an animal from the Humane Society today will receive $25 off the adoption fee.
