WALES: Crash Reaction Averted Pollution
January 31, 2007
SWIFT action by Environment Agency staff helped prevent a North Wales river from being badly polluted after a tanker crash.
An estimated 4,000 litres of red diesel spilled into the Afon Elwy, near Pandy Tudur, Llanrwst, last Friday.
The 35-year-old driver is thought to have jumped out before the tanker crashed.
EA spokeswoman Paula Reynolds said: “It had minimal environmental impact but quick action by officers prevented a much larger amount spilling into the Afon Cledwyn – a tributary of the Elwy.”
EA staff and fire officers used booms in the river. So far there have been no reports of dead fish.
