Cod Are a Hit at the Double

Dave Shields proved there were fish to be caught when he landed a brace of cod weighing in at 10lb 2oz and 2 1/2lb using lug and mussel.

Also among the cod were Paul Turnbull, who took a fish of 7lb 8oz from Castle Rocks, and Stevie Cochrane, who tempted a cod weighing in at 9lb from Cambois Rocks.

While D McCaskill caught his cod of 7lb 6 1/2oz from the River Tyne on ragworm.

Meanwhile, John Thompson landed the fish of the week ( a cod of 16lb on rag and lug, while Ray Hutton caught two cod of 7lb and 6lb ( both fished Teesside’s Middleton Pier.

Elsewhere there have been cod from 3-4lb from the Private Beach, Snab Point, the Beacons, Hadstone, Whitehouse Sands, while Blyth Pier has also produced some reasonable fish.

At night there has also been some excellent whiting to 2lb from Roker Pier using lug and mackerel strip, and there has also been the odd codling to 9lb 14oz.

Durham beaches have given up whiting at night with some reasonable cod during daylight hours.

A private boat fishing out of Hartlepool landed a decent catch with Keith O’Hara taking 15 cod between 6-13lb close in- shore.

Boat anglers have some good competitions to look forward to starting on Sunday, May 20, when the National Federation of Sea Anglers are holding a two-man team boat competition out of Berwick.

Then on Sunday, August 5, they are holding a four-man team boat competition ( both of these events are restricted to members of the NFSA.

On Saturday, July 21, the Bob White Memorial Open Boat competition is being fished out of Amble. Further details from Amble Angling Supplies on (01665) 711 200.

Then on Sunday, June 24, the Fraser’s Open Boat competition is being held out of Amble, North Shields and Sunderland ( this competition is open to all boats, private and charter craft.

Bedlington Station AC are holding an Open Sweepstake shore competition on Sunday.

Fishing is from 9am to 1pm with registration at the Bank House Social Club, Newbiggin, between 7am and 8am on the day or at local tackle shops.

Boundaries are from Blyth Pier to Seahouses North Pier.

Entry is pounds 10 and there is an optional hsf sweep of pounds 2. The amount of cash prizes will depend on entries.
