Area Private Schools Make Improvements

Posted on: Monday, 30 August 2004, 06:00 CDT

When students at some area private schools return to the classroom in a few weeks, they will be greeted with new science labs, fresh paint, new carpeting and other major improvements.

Bethany Christian School

At Bethany, 6730 S. Sheridan Road, classroom walls received a fresh coat of paint and a staff room now features fresh paint and carpeting.

New playground equipment has also been added.

Students can look forward to water and sand play.

"It's a large feature more children can play with. It will be a great asset to our playground," said Sandy Randolph, administrator.

Small tables and a sit-and-spin toy have been added.

The additions were funded though tuition and patron fund- raising.

Victory Christian School

A computer class was upgraded at the high school along with a computer science class with 20 computers. The school is located at 7700 S. Lewis Ave.

Superintendent Dennis Demuth said a hands-on computerized science lab has been added.

Four components will make up the lab, including one for physical science that will deal with light and heat, sound and energy, and electricity and motion.

A second component will revolve around life science where students will learn about health science, animal life and agriculture.

The third, earth science, will teach students about the environment, the solar system, weather and water.

Scientific reasoning will make up the fourth component where students will learn about measurements, inventions and problem solving.

"What we're trying to do is to capture a child's natural curiosity in the area. It's going to be an excited group of second- through fifth-graders using this lab," Demuth said.

Ground was recently broken for a new 5,000-seat auditorium and additional classrooms.

The auditorium will be used for dramas, plays and the 10 a.m. Victory Christian Church service.

"We're outgrowing the 10 a.m. service at the school building so we're going to add a 5,000 seat auditorium to accommodate the growth in church services," he said.

Another structure that will see new additions is the football stadium which has expanded its seating, he said.

Funding for these three major projects is through private donations.

Metro Christian Academy

The school, 6363 S. Trenton Ave., will add science classrooms for the middle school. Classrooms will include lab facilities, demonstration tables, sinks and a science lab for experiments.

The five science classrooms will be built onto the school and will give the middle school an authentic science education in a lab environment, said Headmaster Tim Cameron.

The $600,000 project is being funded from private donations, patrons and foundations, he said.
