City Ready to Welcome Year of Pig

A CITY will hold its traditional Chinese New Year celebrations tomorrow when an annual lion dance takes place.The spectacle marking the start of the Year of the Pig will start at noon in Durham market place and the lion will visit Millennium Square, Prince Bishops Shopping Centre and The Gates shopping centre over two hours.Performed by Oceans’ Apart Kung-Fu, the event has been held for eight years, attracting many visitors.Colin Wilkes, the managing director of Durham Markets, said: “The Lion Dance is a phenomenal spectacle, which celebrates the cultural diversity of the North- East region, as well as our close links with China.”Chinese craft workshops will be held in Clayport library from 2pm tomorrow, on Sunday and next Friday.There will also be sessions from 11am to noon and 1pm to 2pm on Saturday, February 24.Book places by calling 0191386-4003.
