High School Science Stars Perform!: LADWP Science Bowl Among Most Successful Regional Competitions in U.S. Department of Energy National Program

What: Fifteenth Annual LADWP Science Bowl, a quiz show style high school competition, centered on complex college-level math, science and technology questions. LADWP Science Bowl, among the nation’s most successful regional competitions in U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl program. Local teams have won four national titles and placed in top five rankings in nine of the last 12 years. The Franklin Lu Hands-On Competition, this year called, “Load, Logic and Latitude,” is held in the afternoon.

When: Saturday, February 24, 2007

— 8:30 a.m. Competition begins – Round Robin League Play

— 1 – 4 p.m. Double Elimination Tournament of 16 teams

Franklin Lu Hands-On Competition, 32 teams

— 4:30 p.m. Approximate time for final round of competition

Where: LADWP Headquarters, John Ferraro Building, 111 N. Hope Street, A-level, Downtown Los Angeles, Thomas Guide grid point 634-F3. Parking off of 1st St.

Who: — More than 200 of the city’s best students on 42 teams from 27 high schools

— Alumni Coach Moderator, Richard Erdman, Venice High School (retired)

— Alumni Moderator Adam Diament, PhD, former UCLA post doctoral fellow in genetics; member 1993 Venice High School Science Bowl Team.

— Alumni Moderator Tim Liggett, Science Teacher, Whittier High School

— Alumni Official, Joe Antognini, Student, California Institute of Technology

— About 100 volunteers, mainly LADWP employees and their family members.

Why: Science Bowl showcases the talent of local high school scholars, enhances student achievement by providing motivation and incentives for success, and encourages students of all backgrounds to pursue studies and careers in math, science and technology fields.
