LAKE HAYES — A Lake Hayes emergency water ban has been put in place because some residents are abusing the system, using up to 15,000 litres of water a day to keep their lawns and gardens lush. Queenstown Lakes District Council chief executive Duncan Field said yesterday that “everyone misses out when the reservoir drops right down”. Last week water levels in the Lake Hayes reservoir had fallen below the 40 per cent capacity needed to be maintained for fire- fighting in the area. Council water services manager Paul McQueeny said the drop had meant an immediate emergency activation. Watering gardens with a hand held hose was permitted, he said.
