Open House to Look at Refuge Plan

The Mandan chapter of Ducks Unlimited banquet will be held March 14 at the Seven Seas, 2611 Old Red Trail, Mandan.

There will be a social hour at 5:30, dinner at 7 and auction at 8 p.m. Ticket prices are $30 individual, $50 couple, $20 Greenwing, $275 sponsor and $300 sponsor couple.

The Missouri Valley Fly Fishers Club will host a fly casting clinic from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Fore Seasons Center, 2525 N. 19th St.

The clinic is for both beginners and advanced casters. Participants are asked to bring their equipment. There will be equipment available for those who don’t have any. The clinic costs $15 for non-club members.

Professional anglers Johnnie Candle and Jim Carroll will share their walleye fishing knowledge on March 24.

The Scheels Walleye University is an eight-hour day devoted to discussing the fine points of jig fishing, live bait rigging, spinners and crank baits.

Boat control, trolling techniques, and marine electronics also will be covered. There will be time for questions.

Walleye University started in Bismarck in 2003. This year it will be held in Appleton, Wis., Billings, Mont., and Bismarck.

Walleye University will be held at Scheels, Kirkwood Mall in Bismarck, on March 24. It begins at 8:30 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m. Preregister, as seating is limited. The cost of the school is $50. Register at Scheels in Bismarck, 255-7255.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will hold a public open house in Minot to gather public comments on the draft comprehensive conservation plan and environmental assessment for the Souris River Basin National Wildlife Refuge Complex.

The complex includes Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge, J. Clark Salyer National Wildlife Refuge and Upper Souris National Wildlife Refuge, located in north central North Dakota. The refuges were established in 1935 as refuges and breeding grounds for migratory birds and other wildlife.

The open house will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Minot Public Library Meeting Room, at 516 Second Ave. SW, Minot.
