Manhole covers flew up to 2 feet in the air as a series of explosions and an underground fire hit Greenwich Village in New York City.

Corroded electrical wires may have caused the fire, a Con Ed spokeswoman told the New York Daily News.

Road salt and water can eat away at the insulation on the wires, said Con Ed spokeswoman Martha Liipfert. We’re working on repairs.

Five manhole covers blew off at the busy intersection of West Houston Street and Broadway Saturday night. Emergency crews closed a six-block area for hours, the Daily News reported.
