SILVER SPRING, Md., March 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) announces Emer OBroin, Vice President Environmental Safety, Health and Human Rights, Monsanto Company, as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors. She assumed the position on March 6, 2007, during the biannual Board meeting, which took place in Concord, California. She is the first woman to lead the organization in its 19 year history. OBroin has served on the WHC Board of Directors since 2003 and previously as Secretary-Treasurer.
"I'm very honored and excited to have the opportunity to support the WHC and their exemplary efforts in environmental stewardship and restoration," OBroin said. "I'm proud of what Monsanto has accomplished with its WHC certified sites which demonstrate our commitment to conservation and biodiversity, and I look forward to continuing to incorporate that mentality in our business."

"Progressive, insightful and imaginative industry leaders are the hallmark of WHC's leadership over its history bringing about dramatic changes in environmental stewardship and community relations. Emer OBroin has been a strong advocate for the integration of these ideas with business operations at Monsanto. We are extremely pleased that she has agreed to extend her leadership as Board Chairman," said Bob Johnson, President, Wildlife Habitat Council.
Monsanto has been involved with WHC since 1989, exemplifying a true commitment as a steward of nature. Projects already spearheaded by Monsanto range from native plantings, nest box construction and education outreach to land reclamation, prairie management and wetlands restoration. Monsanto's World Headquarters in St. Louis recently received its WHC certification for its Wildlife at Work(SM) program demonstrating a commitment toward long-term wildlife habitat enhancement efforts. Monsanto's Luling, Louisiana; Muscatine, Iowa; and Soda Springs, Idaho, plants as well as the Monsanto Farm & Wildlife Management Center in Stuttgart, Arkansas, also earned WHC recertification for comprehensive wildlife habitat management Wildlife at Work(SM) programs.
The Muscatine facility was presented in 2004 with a special certificate of recognition by WHC and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Environmental Performance Track Program for its prairie restoration area and Big Sand Nature Preserve. The facility was commended for habitat restoration and improvement projects as well as a strong commitment to public outreach, transparency of operations and corporate citizenship.
During the Board of Directors' visit to California, members were given the opportunity to view several of WHC's award-winning member sites and projects. Since 1990, WHC has certified 408 programs worldwide. The certification program recognizes outstanding wildlife habitat management and environmental education efforts at corporate sites, and offers third-party validation of the benefits of such programs. Certification requirements are strict and require that sites apply for periodic renewal.
