EDMONTON (CP) – Prime Minister Stephen Harper was expected to hand over big dollars to Alberta from the federal government’s new Eco Fund during his visit to Edmonton on Thursday.

Premier Ed Stelmach, Harper and his environment and natural resources ministers were planning to hold a news conference at Government House at 4 p.m.

Most observers were anticipating an announcement worth millions for climate change issues in the province.

Some of that money could end up going to construction of a $1.5-billion carbon dioxide pipeline.

Alberta is proposing to capture carbon dioxide emissions from heavy emitters and pump them into mature oilfields.

The process known as carbon sequestration would also dramatically enhance the recovery of conventional oil from depleting reservoirs.

Stelmach has already said that’s the kind of infrastructure investment that has to occur in the oilsands-rich province to ensure a cleaner environment.
