An explosion in a car outside a Mocksville, N.C., nursing home engulfed the building in flames and killed one resident and injured 19 others.

Davie County (N.C.) Assistant Manager Beth Dirks said the State Bureau of Investigation has been called to investigate the explosion and fire Monday night at the Davie Place Nursing Home.

The front of the building was badly damaged by fire. Dirks told CNN four of the 19 injured residents were in critical condition and two police officers required treatment for smoke inhalation.

The Winston-Salem (N.C.) Journal said there were 49 people in the building when the explosion and fire happened.

Residents were initially transported to the emergency room at Davie County Hospital and another nursing home nearby, the newspaper said.
