KING CITY, Ont. (CP) - Prime Minister Stephen Harper says the federal government will spend $225 million to help preserve ecologically sensitive lands.
Harper says the money will be used to, in his words, reward the generosity of landowners who agree to preserve land from development. The government will work with the Nature Conservancy of Canada to seek donation, purchase or preservation agreements with landowners.
Where lands are to be purchased, the Nature Conservancy will seek matching funds from private donors.
Other landowners willl get tax breaks for agreeing to preserve the land.
Harper says the project will protect as much as 202,300 hectares of wilderness in southern Canada.
The prime minister made the announcement Wednesday after touring a conservation area in King City, north of Toronto, before unveiling what he called a different aspect of the Tories' environmental agenda.
