PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Metanexus Institute is pleased to announce that Kathleen Duffy, SSJ, Ph.D., has been elected its new president replacing Solomon Katz, Ph.D., whose term concluded August 31, 2004. Duffy, who is a professor of physics at Chestnut Hill College, has worked closely with Metanexus since its creation, serving most recently as treasurer. She was a leader in drafting the organization's mission and values statements. Katz, who is director of the Krogman Center of Childhood Growth and Development at the University of Pennsylvania and principle investigator of the Institute's Spiritual Transformation Research Program, will continue as an active member of the board of directors.
"Since I joined the Board in 1999," said Duffy, "I have watched the Institute emerge from a small but vibrant local dialogue group called the Philadelphia Center for Religion and Science to a worldwide organization - the Metanexus Institute. It is an honor to be involved in this very important mission and to work with the Institute's wonderful staff."
Kathleen Duffy received her Ph.D. in physics from Drexel University. Before going to Chestnut Hill College, she taught physics at Drexel, Bryn Mawr College, Ateneo de Manila University, and University of the Philippines. Her current research interest is in the synthetic work of Teilhard de Chardin and its relationship to modern developments in science. She has published some of her work in this field in "Teilhard Studies."
Edward J. Devinney, Ph.D., visiting professor in both the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Villanova University and the Department of Astronomy at the University of Florida, will now assume the role of treasurer. Peter Dodson, Ph.D., School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and president emeritus of Metanexus, will become secretary as the term of Andrew Newberg, M.D., Department of Radiology, University of Pennsylvania Hospital, expires. The Metanexus Institute is a membership organization that advances research, education, and outreach on the constructive engagement of science and religion. We seek to create an enduring intellectual and social movement by collaborating with persons and communities from diverse religious traditions and scientific disciplines. In a spirit of humility and with deep concern for intellectual rigor, the Metanexus Institute promotes a balanced and exploratory dialogue between science and religion. While mindful of the complexities of this endeavor, we work to develop integrative approaches that enrich the domains of both science and religion. Some of the projects of the Metanexus Institute are the Local Societies Initiative, the Templeton Research Lectures, the Spiritual Transformation Scientific Research Program, and the Spiritual Capital Research Program.
