Sullivan & Worcester LLP Expands Energy and Environmental Capabilities With Addition of Environmental & Natural Resource Team

Posted on: Wednesday, 14 March 2007, 15:00 CDT

WASHINGTON, March 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Leading environmental and natural resources lawyers Jeffrey Karp and Jerome C. Muys, Jr. join Sullivan & Worcester LLP as Partners. The new team will expand the firm's nationally- recognized Energy and Environmental Practice to provide a full spectrum of energy, environmental and natural resource practice capabilities. The expansion of this practice aligns with Sullivan & Worcester's strategy to develop practice strength in areas of particular interest and value to international and domestic clients.

Mr. Muys and Mr. Karp will utilize their combined 50 years of experience in all aspects of environmental law to build the Environmental and Natural Resources Practice to meet the rapidly growing need for cost-effective solutions to environmental issues.

Jeff Karp described the move to Sullivan & Worcester as "an exciting opportunity to establish an environmental and natural resources practice incorporating a multidisciplinary approach to address our clients' fast- changing needs."

Jerry Muys, who will serve as practice area director for the new Environmental & Natural Resources Group, added that "the impressive energy team at S&W was a major draw for us. They are a match for our entrepreneurial drive to extend our transactional capabilities and continue to litigate high- stakes environmental cases. As corporate and consumer attitudes and obligations to the environment and energy conservation shift dramatically, we see a unique opportunity to practice at the cutting edge of environmental law here at Sullivan & Worcester."

Jerry and Jeff are reunited with their former colleague, Julie Weisman, practicing as counsel with Sullivan & Worcester since April of 2006. Her practice is wide in breadth and includes handling environmental issues associated with commercial transactions, representation of clients subject to regulatory enforcement, handling of hazardous waste issues, litigating large multi-party cases, and assisting with exposure issues, including mold, asbestos, and heavy metals. They are also joined by Laura Ford Brust, counsel, who has represented clients in administrative and civil proceedings related to waste management and remediation, in transactional matters, and in achieving compliance with a variety of environmental laws and regulations.

"It's clear that businesses, energy providers and regulators are already trying to find ways to respond to an increase in interest -- from the government, media and consumers -- on environmental issues" says Clint Vince, director of Sullivan & Worcester's energy practice and managing partner of the firm's D.C. office. "With the addition of Jeff, Jerry and their team, we are perfectly positioned to help clients maximize the opportunities this interest raises and minimize their impact on the environment (without negatively impacting their business functionality)," said Vince.

Jeff Karp comes to Sullivan & Worcester with a strong background in regulatory compliance, enforcement and litigation. He is experienced in handling a wide range of commercial and property transactional matters and in resolving property remediation disputes. Mr. Karp has substantial experience developing infrastructure projects and advising clients regarding land use, environmental, and historical preservation requirements affecting such projects. Mr. Karp has been in private practice for the past 17 years. Prior to entering private practice, he served as a Senior Attorney at the Environment and Natural Resources Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Mr. Karp received his J.D. from Antioch University and a B.A. magna cum laude from Brandeis University.

Jerry Muys has represented clients in enforcement proceedings and Superfund cost recovery actions in over 30 states. He has advised clients and litigated claims regarding contaminated property issues in both state and federal administrative and judicial proceedings, and has extensive experience in compliance counseling involving Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act regulatory issues. Prior to entering private practice in 1986, Mr. Muys served with the U.S. Department of Justice as a trial attorney with the Land and Natural Resources Division and at the Environmental Protection Administration's Office of Enforcement, focusing primarily on hazardous waste issues. He also has written on a range of litigation and enforcement issues and also taught courses on private claims and contribution rights under Superfund.

Mr. Muys received his J.D. and LL.M (Master of Laws) from George Washington University Law School and a B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He will serve as practice area director for the Environmental & Natural Resources practice group.
