Mar. 14–SURFSIDE BEACH — The proposed redevelopment of the former Harbor Light Driving Range cleared its final hurdle Tuesday, clearing the way for a 49-home development in Surfside Beach.

Once developers secure building permits they can begin construction, said town Zoning Administrator Michelle Grandell.

Surfside Beach Town Council members on Tuesday unanimously approved the second reading of an ordinance that defines the streets within the development.

The permit process could take some time, although it was unclear how long, Grandell said.

The land did not have to be rezoned for the project, which will have two entrances off 10th Avenue North.

In other news, the council members also passed the first reading of ordinances for the 2007-08 budget and next year’s tax millage. The rate will remain at 44 mills, including 39 designated for the general fund and five for stormwater improvements, according to an issue paper.

The Town Council also discussed potential routes for the East Coast Greenway through the town.

Mayor Roy Hyman Jr. said Horry County Councilman Howard Barnard has assured him that the county would not allow Surfside Beach’s stretch of the proposed path to enter Garden City Beach on Ocean Boulevard.

No decision was made on the issue, although the town could lose more than $300,000 in funding for the greenway, which would link cities from Maine to Key West, Fla.
