Australian scientists are looking for investment for their research into harnessing the sun to create fuel from salt water.

Researchers at the University of New South Wales say they are working on using titanium oxide to absorb sunlight from saltwater to produce hydrogen.

The leader of the research team, Dr. Leigh Shepherd, told the Australian Broadcasting Corp: Hydrogen fuel is very clean. When you combust it, it produces water not carbon dioxide, which is a greenhouse gas. There is a lot of promise as we just need sunlight and salt water for a sustainable, clean fuel.

Shepherd says it is hard to obtain commercial investment to match government funding for research into low emission technology when such technology is a decade away.
