The University of Southern Maine’s Southworth Planetarium will host “Poetry and Physics Under the Stars” with poet George Drew at 7:30 p.m. today.

Drew will read from his book “The Horse’s Name Was Physics,” a collection of poems about the birth of modern physics and the advent of the nuclear age.

The book, which has garnered praise from both critics and scientists, brings together science, history, politics and the lives of the people involved.

Drew’s work has appeared in a variety of literary journals and he was the 2003 recipient of the Paumanok Poetry Award.

The reading is free and open to the public and a brief reception with refreshments will follow. The event is sponsored by the planetarium, the Stone Coast Writers’ Workshop and the USM departments of physics and English..
