BHP Billiton's Cabrillo Port Endorsed By Regional Legislative Alliance

Posted on: Friday, 6 April 2007, 21:00 CDT

OXNARD, Calif., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Regional Legislative Alliance of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties (RLA), representing over 300,000 local jobs, voted today to endorse Cabrillo Port, the floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) to natural gas transfer facility proposed by BHP Billiton for 14 miles off the Ventura County coastline. RLA is a cooperative council of 12 of the leading chambers of commerce and associations in the Santa Barbara and Ventura county region. Recognizing these areas are one geographic and economic community with regional issues common to each chamber and association, the mission of the Regional Legislative Alliance is to develop policy for the participating members on key federal and state issues.

"Cabrillo Port will bring cleaner energy and needed natural gas from its distant offshore location to heat our homes, cook our food, power the businesses that employ us all, and transport our employees by natural gas powered buses and other vehicles, without the need for an onshore terminal. RLA's board and membership are simply recognizing the tremendous value proposition Cabrillo Port represents to our community and to our state," says Kathi Hann, BHP Billiton's environmental advisor based in the company's Oxnard offices.

For California, now is the right time for the right natural gas project in the right place. BHP Billiton's Cabrillo Port project will supply California with a reliable source of clean energy to replace polluting coal and oil, helping to reduce carbon emissions while serving a growing population. Cabrillo Port will protect the marine and air environments consistent with California's world leading environmental protection programs, and is safely located 14 miles off shore, where it will not be visible on most days, and on those few clear days when it could be seen, it will have the visual impact of a grain of rice on the horizon.
