Apr. 9–SACRAMENTO-A Sacramento man died early Sunday after attempting a swim in the frigid waters of a lake in North Natomas Regional Park.
Jonathan Calderon, 22, was pronounced dead at UC Davis Medical Center around 4:40 a.m. after divers found him submerged under the waters of the park’s man-made lake for nearly two hours, according to the Sacramento Fire Department.
Around 2:30 a.m., Calderon and a second young man were allegedly attempting a swim to an island in the middle of the lake, approximately 50 yards from the shore, said Capt. Jim Doucette of the Sacramento Fire Department.
“It was cold last night,” said Doucette, who estimated the water was “50 degrees at max.”
As they swam, Calderon allegedly struggled and went under, fire officials said. His companion, whose identity was not available, was rescued from the island and treated for hypothermia, Doucette said. It is unclear why the two attempted to reach the island, he said.
