NEW YORK - The Borromeo String Quartet, violinist Yura Lee and bassist DaXun Zhang have won $25,000 Avery Fisher Career Grants for rising performers.
Formed in 1989 in Stresa, Italy, the Borromeo is the quartet in residence at the New England Conservatory of Music and at Dai-Ichi Semei Hall in Tokyo. Its members are violinists Nicholas Kitchen and Kristopher Tong, violist Mai Motobuchi and cellist Yeesun Kim. They have collaborated with such composers as John Cage, Steven Mackey, Osvaldo Golijov and Gunther Schuller.
The South Korean-born Lee, 21, has appeared with such orchestras as the New York Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra and the Tokyo Philharmonic.
Zhang, 25, was born in China, and has played with Lincoln Center's Chamber Music Society. Zhang is scheduled to perform with Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project.
The Avery Fisher grants, which are designed to give professional assistance and recognition to talented young instrumentalists and chamber ensembles, were to be handed out Tuesday night at Lincoln Center.
Previous recipients include violinists Joshua Bell, Leila Josefowicz and Gil Shaham, bassist Edgar Meyer and pianist Christopher O'Riley.
It was previously announced that Bell had won this year's $75,000 Avery Fisher Prize. The Fisher awards are named for the late classical music benefactor and electronics wizard who helped fund Lincoln Center.
