One Week After Tempting Anglers With Open Water, Lake

April 11, 2007
Repost This

One week after tempting anglers with open water, Lake Sakakawea froze over and sent most people home for the time being. A couple of warm, windy days would open things up again and bring people back to the water.

The only report of open ice was in a place called Ski Bay, near McKenzie Bay, where northern anglers had some success.

Smaller area lakes were said to be open, but there was little activity reported.

Remember, when you see ice, leave it alone.

Andrus Outdoors, Dickinson (Lake Sakakawea, area lakes): Fishing was slow last week after Lake Sakakawea froze over again. Ice is not thick, but most of the lake is covered. Ski Bay is the only open water reported and it did produce some northern. Most small lakes are open, but not reporting much fishing.

Cenex Bait and Tackle-Rodger’s Guide Service, Garrison (Lake Sakakawea-Lake Audubon): Not a lot of activity reported. Anglers were shore fishing for northern, but stopped when lake froze over last week. Lake Audubon has some open water on the north shore line and east end embankment for shore fishing. Missouri River was producing some fish again.

Dakota Tackle, Bismarck (Missouri River, Tailrace, Lake Oahe, area lakes): Not safe enough to ice fish, and too lousy to shore fish. It’s been quiet due to the weather. Most anglers are going to Tailrace, Nelson Lake or the Missouri River bank.

Scott’s Bait and Tackle, Pick City (Lake Sakakawea, Lake Audubon, Tailrace, Missouri River): On Lake Sakakawea, there is hardly any northern fishing as there is no open water. And even where water was open last week, fishing had slowed. The Tailrace is good for boats and shore for walleye on jigs and minnows.
