Governor Rendell to Activate State Emergency Operations Center Tonight in Response to Predicted Snowfall and Rain

Posted on: Saturday, 14 April 2007, 18:00 CDT

HARRISBURG, Pa., April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Governor Edward G. Rendell today announced that the state emergency operations center in Harrisburg will be elevated to Level III activation at 8 p.m. tonight in anticipation of a storm that is forecasting snowfall and rain for most of the state. The heaviest snowfall is expected to impact the northern tier counties, which could see up to eight inches of snow in higher elevations. Rain amounts between one and three inches are expected for other areas of Pennsylvania.

"While snowfall in April is highly unusual, it is critical to remain vigilant in executing winter weather preparedness plans," Governor Rendell said.

The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) has communicated with the National Weather Service and counties to plan for adverse local and regional weather conditions. Other state department and agency personnel including PennDOT, state police, the department of Military and Veterans Affairs, Public Utility Commission, and the Susquehanna River Basin Commission will be staffed in the state emergency operations center during the activation.

Additional state agency personnel from the Turnpike Commission, departments of General Services, Environmental Protection, Health as well as the American Red Cross are on standby.

Motorists within Pennsylvania may call PennDOT's 24-hour, toll-free road condition hotline at 1-888-783-6783 for interstate conditions. Out-of-state motorists can call 717-783-5186. For assistance in the event of an emergency, call 911.
