Pennsylvania Governor Rendell Says Luzerne County Receiving Additional $650,000 to Create Jobs, Fund Flood Recovery Efforts

Posted on: Wednesday, 18 April 2007, 15:00 CDT

HARRISBURG, Pa., April 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Governor Edward G. Rendell today said Luzerne County is getting an additional $650,000 in federal funding to create jobs and complete clean up and recovery efforts from flooding last June and July.

"These funds will be used to continue the hard work of putting lives, businesses and the community back together," Governor Rendell said. "Cleaning and rebuilding has taken time, and we are committed to helping return people's lives to normal."

This latest round of federal funding brings Luzerne-Schuylkill Workforce Investment Area's share of disaster relief for last summer's flooding to over $2.4 million.

Clean up and recovery efforts include clearing debris along streams and rivers; repairing and replacing washed-out culverts and drainage areas; repairing public hiking trails and parks; removing brush and fallen trees; constructing head walls; stabilizing areas of erosion; and transporting materials to complete projects.

Workers are recruited through local Pennsylvania CareerLink offices and local officials determine worksite locations. Positions are available for laborers, crew leaders and project coordinators.

Individuals who have lost jobs as a result of the flooding, or who may be classified as long-term unemployed, are eligible for jobs funded by the grant.
