USDA Agricultural Air Quality Task Force to Meet in San Diego

Posted on: Thursday, 26 April 2007, 12:11 CDT

SAN DIEGO, April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- California is hosting the U.S. Department of Agriculture's 29-member Agricultural Air Quality Task Force in San Diego on May 8-10 at the Hyatt Regency Islandia on 1441 Quivira Road. The meeting is open to the public.

"The nationwide membership will be treated to a peek inside California's unique air quality situation," says Ed Burton, State Conservationist of USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in California. "Tours and presenters will acquaint the panel with the air quality challenges that come with arid agriculture, the evolving state political environment, and key air quality research for agricultural settings."

Following a field tour to the Salton Sea, a methane digester, a bio-diesel plant and palm date production in Coachella Valley, members will convene the public meeting on Tuesday morning. Invited speakers and Task Force subcommittees will hear briefings and discuss proposed action plans on ongoing and cutting edge topics including animal feeding operations, internal combustion engines, alternative fuels, ozone and particulate matter.

The public is invited to address the task force or comment upon proposed actions on the afternoon of May 9. Each speaker will be given up to five minutes for an oral presentation. Speakers must register at the meeting. Written comments will also be accepted.

"The noted scientists and other experts in air quality involved with this committee offer USDA excellent guidance on agricultural air quality issues," said Burton. "Agriculture has a key role to play in putting the Nation on a winning track with respect to energy conservation and generation. We look forward to the input we receive from this broad-ranging group and from the public."

Producers, academics, industry representatives and other experts in agriculture and air quality comprise the task force. USDA representation includes NRCS, which chairs the task force, Forest Service, Economic Research Service, Agricultural Research Service and Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service.
