Long Island American Water Files for Rate Increase

Posted on: Tuesday, 1 May 2007, 15:00 CDT

LYNBROOK, N.Y., May 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Long Island Water Corporation, doing business as Long Island American Water, Nassau County's largest water supplier, has asked the New York Public Service Commission for approval of a rate increase that will increase customer bills by 22.74%. The Company anticipates the effective date for new rates to be April 1, 2008. The Company's last rate order was issued and effective March 2005. Even with this increase, water from Long Island American Water is still less than one penny per gallon.

Since the last rate increase, the Company has invested approximately $30 million in upgrades and improvements to its system. Those improvements include a progressive main replacement program to improve service reliability, completion of the installation of automated meter reading devices, and upgrades to the Company's water treatment plant filters to ensure their customers are getting the highest quality water.

"The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has estimated infrastructure replacements and upgrades to water systems in the United States to be in the billions of dollars," said Walter Lynch, president of Long Island American Water. "With top quality service our first priority, we are doing our share to replace mains and upgrade facilities in the communities we serve," Lynch continued. William Varley, vice president and general manager of Long Island American Water added, "With the completion of the automated meter reading program, Long Island American Water is able to obtain 99.9% actual meter reads, allowing us to provide customer usage information without the need to enter the customers homes."

In addition to providing 24-hour customer service, the Company is also proposing a low-income assistance program. This program will help customers, with annual incomes at or below the Federal Poverty Guidelines, pay their water bills. It may also help our senior citizens who are on fixed incomes. If the Commission grants approval for the program, the Company will issue details for its customers at that time.

Upon receipt of this request, the Commission will conduct a thorough investigation, including public hearings before a decision is made. The regulatory process usually takes 11 months.

Long Island American Water is the largest water supplier in Nassau County, serving a population of more than 248,000 in 31 south shore communities. The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of American Water, the largest and most diverse provider of water services in North America. With headquarters in Voorhees, N.J., American Water employs approximately 7,000 who serve more than 17 million people in 29 states and Canada.
