'Toxic Baby Bottles' Fears Cause Parents to Look for Alternatives

Posted on: Thursday, 3 May 2007, 18:00 CDT

GORDONSVILLE, Va., May 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Any parent a mouse-click away from Google can read recent accounts of the baby bottle dilemma in the United States. The Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, and other media outlets across the country are covering the story surrounding the release of Toxic Baby Bottles: Scientific Study Finds Leaching Chemicals in Clear Plastic Baby Bottles, a report by Environment California Research & Policy Center.

The environmental advocacy group claims the toxic chemical bisphenol-A, or BPA, which is used in the manufacture of most polycarbonate plastics, leaches from clear plastic baby bottles. The organization's full report can be downloaded by visiting http://www.environmentcalifornia.org/.

"Scientists have linked very low doses of bisphenol A exposure to cancers, impaired immune function, early onset of puberty, obesity, diabetes, and hyperactivity, among other problems," writes Rachel Gibson, report author. "At the store, parents should select baby bottles that are made from glass or a safer non-polycarbonate plastic."

Linear low density polyethylene, or LLDPE, is a non-polycarbonate plastic used in the manufacture of disposable baby bottle liners from PBM Products, LLC. PBM's store-brand baby bottle liners, which are available in most major U.S. retail locations under the brand names of individual retailers, are made of polymers that meet world-class environmental and safety standards and do not contaminate baby formula with BPA.

"Newspapers are reporting growing sales of glass baby bottles, which are selling for high prices on eBay," said Paul B. Manning, CEO of PBM Products. "We are also seeing sales of our plastic bottle liners grow as more moms and dads are looking for convenient and affordable alternatives to traditional plastic baby bottles."

PBM's store-brand baby bottle liners are pre-sterilized, flexible, collapsible, disposable, and impact resistant. PBM's powder infant and toddler formulas are manufactured in northern Vermont and available in more than 20,000 retail locations in the United States, Canada, Mexico, China, South Africa, and Europe.
