Flooding Kept at Bay
A pounds 100,000 flood defence scheme will be officially opened in County Durham next week.
The project led by the Environment Agency will protect homes in the Chester-le-Street area.
Designed in consultation with the Riverside Residents’ Association and Chester-le-Street District Council, the scheme is at the Parks estate in a large meander of the River Wear where flooding in 2000 and hydraulic studies have shown that some homes are at risk.
The Environment Agency built a 230 metre floodbank and 50 metres of floodwall to protect eight properties.
David Huntington, project manager at the Environment Agency said: “A new wildlife area there creates another location for the public to enjoy.”
