Prof Must Sit GCSE to Teach

A SPACE scientist will lose his job teaching A-level physics at a state school unless he sits a maths GCSE exam.

But David Wolfe, 65, a retired professor who has a PhD in Physics from a leading US university, is refusing to take the test.

He said: “It is ludicrous to ask me to take an exam for 16-year- olds. I love teaching but it would be humiliating to submit myself to assessors much younger and less experienced than myself.”

Boys at the Royal Grammar School in High Wycombe, Bucks, are petitioning School Standards Minister David Miliband.

Head Tim Dingle said: “I am incensed. He was head of physics at the University of New Mexico with 80 physicists including Nobel prize winners.

“He is an expert on nuclear and particle physics yet the General Teaching Council wants him to take a maths test.”

The Teacher Training Agency said: “There is an equivalence test to prove his US qualifications reach the same standard.”
