Catalina Island Fire Burns Homes

Military hovercraft delivered fire engines Friday to Santa Catalina Island off the California coast, where a brushfire had burned thousands of acres.
The 4,000-acre fire destroyed some homes, a commercial building and some storage structures in the historic resort town of Avalon and forced the evacuation of residents and tourists, KTLA-TV, Los Angeles, reported.
I was born and raised here and I've never seen anything like this, Art Peguero of the Hotel Mac Rae on the beach in Avalon told the Los Angeles Daily News. He said some hotel guests had left the hotel Thursday and headed to the beach.
They have no choice but to stay on the beach until further notice, he told the Daily News.
The smoky fire, fed by southern California's record-breaking dry conditions and 20 mph winds, started about 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
While extra ferries were added to speed evacuations, some residents chose to stay on the island to try to protect their homes.
These houses are so close together it won't take much for the fire to jump from one to another, resident Joseph Hernandez told the Los Angeles Times as he sprayed water on his roof.
