Value of Singapore's Oil, Petrochemical and Chemical Output Grew By 12% to Around S$74.7 Billion Last Year

Posted on: Wednesday, 16 May 2007, 00:00 CDT

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c56912) has announced the addition of Singapore's Energy Industry with focus on Jurong Island to their offering.

A PROFILE OF SINGAPORE' OIL, PETROCHEMICAL AND CHEMICAL INDUSTRY

The value of Singapore's oil, petrochemical and chemical output grew by 12% to around S$74.7 billion last year, accounting for a third of the country's total manufacturing output.

Thanks to sharply higher oil prices, the sector has overtaken the electronics sector to become Singapore's largest manufacturing component last year.

According to the Economic Development Board, Singapore's oil, petrochemical and chemical output grew at a compounded annual average rate of almost 24% from 2002 to 2006. The industry's outlook remains bright, with continued strong growth forecast for the next five to 10 years. The Singapore Chemical Industry Council (SCIC) has predicted the industry's output will double in the coming decade as a result of continued expansion of the basic petrochemical complexes by Shell and ExxonMobil. Ciba Specialty Chemicals, RohMax Oil Additives, Lucite International, Sumitomo Chemical and Huntsman are also building new plants, said the SCIC.

JURONG ISLAND

Most of Singapore's oil, petrochemicals and chemicals production takes place on Jurong Island, an island located just a km off the main island.

The story of Jurong Island as an integrated hydrocarbon production and supply chain is continuing to unfold. The concept of merging seven smaller islands south of Singapore into the country's oil, gas, petrochemical and chemical hub was first proposed in the late 1980s, and began to take shape in the mid-1990s.

The resurgence of the world energy markets from 2003 helped accelerate Jurong Island's development after a period of relative quiet.

In 2005, the emergence of the global biofuels industry in response to high oil prices and climate change concerns added a new dimension to the growth of Jurong Island's energy complex. The inclusion of biodiesel and biofuels production will add to the hydrocarbon chain on Jurong Island.

This book contains an update of the companies operating on Jurong Island and near it, and how their activities contribute to Singapore's downstream oil, petrochemicals and chemicals production. Three giant oil refineries provide feedstocks to more than 30 large downstream manufacturing plants on the island. These petrochemical products are then broken down and converted to materials and plastics for the production of a wide range of household and commercial products.

The Jurong Island manufacturing complex is supported by service companies such as the power and water utility providers, natural gas suppliers, storage and logistics firms, inspectors, surveyors and testers, security and safety firms, environmental consultants and telecommunications services companies.

The growing link between the oil refiners, petrochemical and chemical companies and service companies help everyone on Jurong Island gain economies of scale and efficiency.

A list of the tenants and companies on Jurong Island is contained in the book. Also included are companies operating on the main island of Singapore. They represent the oil, gas, power, petrochemical, chemical, logistics, support and engineering industries.
