Subway Closed After Reports of Chemical Smell
By CALUM MACDONALD
THE Glasgow Subway was temporarily shut yesterday after a chemical scare.
The underground train system was closed for an hour and a half as fire crews investigated reports of a chemical smell.
Two employees reported feeling unwell and smelling fumes at the West Street station, south of the River Clyde.
The Subway, which was closed at midday, reopened at around 1.30pm after being declared safe by investigators. It is thought the smell may have been caused by the demolition of a former chemical factory near the station. A British Transport Police spokesman said: “Two members of staff reported smelling something and the fire service undertook tests. Nothing untoward was found and the Subway was reopened at around 1.30pm.”
Meanwhile, Kilmarnock College said yesterday investigations are ongoing into the cause of an “odorous irritant” which caused an evacuation of the main building on Wednesday morning.
