Federal Plan Not Doing Enough to Cut Greenhouse Gases: Ont. Minister
TORONTO (CP) – Ontario’s environment minister says the federal government’s environment plan doesn’t go far enough and that Canada should do more to reduce greenhouse gases.
Laurel Broten says she and other provincial environment ministers will use today’s meeting in Toronto to provide constructive criticism and feedback regarding the federal plan.
Broten says Ottawa has to act on things like transportation and reducing the amount of product packaging that ends up in landfills.
She says she is working with other environment ministers, particularly those in Manitoba and Quebec, to share information on environmental issues.
Quebec Environment Minister Line Beauchamp says she’ll be pushing during the meeting for a carbon tax and assurances that provincial businesses won’t be penalized for not meeting Kyoto targets.
Federal Environment Minister John Baird was scheduled to leave the talks early, but had a last-minute change of plans.
