FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Crews searched a popular Interior Alaska lake by helicopter and boat Wednesday for two canoeists, a day after finding the body of a woman who had been with them.
Searchers found the body of Liza Lomando, 20, about one-eighth of a mile from where a Harding Lake resident found an empty canoe Sunday night.
Lomando was last seen alive Sunday afternoon in the red canoe with camping companions Travis Alexander, 19, and Kathy Garrigan, 24. All three worked in Nenana, near Fairbanks.
They had driven to Harding Lake at the start of the Memorial Day weekend and were due back in Nenana on Monday. The truck the three had used was found at their campsite, which did not appear to have been disturbed, investigators said.
The sky was clear for most of the search Tuesday, but residents said there had been rough weather over the weekend. Ice had not completely melted on the 2,500-acre lake, a popular fishing and water-skiing destination, is 45 miles south of Fairbanks.
