Appealing to Need for English Language Learners, Classworks By Curriculum Advantage Now Includes English Literacy Materials

Curriculum Advantage, Inc. announced today that it is incorporating new content for Classworks -- a network-based system of K-12 reading and mathematics curriculum and learning tools that currently comprise over 3,000 hours of curriculum. The new curriculum is specifically designed for English Language Learners (ELL) and English as a second language (ESL) students. The new additions will add approximately 1,000 hours of instruction to Classworks' 8,600+ reading, mathematics and language arts activities and broaden its application in the classroom.
Classworks, which is successfully being used in schools across the country for remediation in language arts and mathematics education, can now be more easily used by teachers with remedial and non-English speaking students. Many teachers encounter students with little understanding of the English language and find it difficult to mainstream ELL students in traditional classes. The new English Literacy resources in Classworks give teachers a tool to reach these students and help them catch up with their peers. It does so with great accuracy because Classworks includes internal benchmarking assessments or the ability to import high-stakes test data to prescribe individualized learning plans.
Classworks is already a recognized reading resource worthy of purchase using Title II, Part D funds as allocated by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB). Classworks is also aligned with the five key components of reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, as defined by the National Institute for Literacy and the Partnership for Reading. The addition of English as a second language content enhances its ability to help students who are new to the English language and furthers its value as a language arts and reading instructional tool.
The dynamic and engaging system is also particularly attractive to all students, including English Language Learners, because the visual aides, sound and interactive instruction appeal to multiple senses and capture students' attention.
The addition of ELL content is a natural extension of Curriculum Advantage's development plan for Classworks which also includes the recent release of an Algebra Series for middle school mathematics education. "We are pleased to add this new ELL content to Classworks and further meet the needs of the English Language Learners and teachers working with ESL students," said Mr. Lindsey Cook, president and CEO of Curriculum Advantage. "We will continue to broaden Classworks ability to meet the needs of all students, from those needing remediation to those who are in accelerated programs."
Curriculum Advantage will release the new resources in Spring 2005 as part of a product upgrade that will include a new student/teacher interface and other enhancements.
