Russia detains Japanese fishing boat
MOSCOW, June 3 (Xinhua) — Russia detained a Japanese fishing boat near its far-east Kamchatka region on Friday, accusing it of illegal operations, the Interfax news agency reported on Sunday.
The boat, Hoshin Maru 88, with 16 crew members and the captain on board, was detained on Friday in Russia’s exclusive economic zone, Interfax cited the northeastern border department of the Federal Security Service as saying.
It was accused of excessive fishing of salmon after Russian inspectors found an estimated 14-ton difference between the actual and reported catch.
The Japanese boat has been escorted to Port Petropavlovsk- Kamchatski to count the actual weight of the alleged illegally- caught fish, Interfax said.
