Rhodia's Chemistry Connection Promotes Science Education During National Chemistry Week

Thousands of students in elementary and middle schools across the country are learning first-hand about the benefits of chemistry to their health and daily lives, thanks to an award-winning science education program sponsored by Rhodia Inc. (NYSE:RHA).
In connection with National Chemistry Week, Oct. 17-23, Rhodia is conducting a series of "Chemistry Connection(R)" demonstrations, the company's science education program that brings chemistry to life for students in Rhodia's North American manufacturing communities.
Chemistry Connection(R) is a classroom presentation led by Rhodia employee volunteers who demonstrate the principles of chemistry found in everyday household products. The program offers students an opportunity to take their turn as "laboratory scientists," performing desk-top experiments using common ingredients found in supermarkets, homes and classrooms.
"Encouraging elementary- and middle-school students to explore the sciences is absolutely essential for developing the next generation of laboratory researchers," according to Jean-Pierre Marchand, director of Rhodia's Research and Technical Center in Cranbury, N.J.
"Thousands of everyday products, from soaps and detergents, shampoos and cosmetics to food, pharmaceuticals and fuel additives, are created through innovations that start with a basic understanding of chemistry and the sciences," Marchand explains.
"That basic enthusiasm for the sciences often takes root in the inquisitive mind of a student. What better way to spark their interest, than to reinforce the value of science with students and teachers in their classrooms?"
More than 250,000 students nationwide have participated in Chemistry Connection(R) since the program was launched in 1989. Chemistry Connection(R) was cited for its innovative approach to science education by the American Chemical Society, sponsor of National Chemistry Week.
Rhodia also opens its laboratories periodically for tours by neighbors and other local community leaders.
