MUCH of Scotland was affected by heavy rain and unseasonably low temperatures yesterday as strong north-easterly winds swept across the country.

Aflood watch notice for the Scottish Borders was issued by the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) as up to 30mm of rain fell yesterday, threatening flooding from small water courses.

The picture was the same across most of the country, with cloudy skies and the fresh winds coming in off the Atlantic making most places feel chillier than normal.

Heavy rain was expected over night in East Lothian, the Borders, Lanarkshire, Fife, Tayside and the east of the Grampian region, although the Western isles were expected to remain dry.

The outlook for today was not much betterwith forecasts of cloud, rain and wind for most of the country, although drier, brighter intervals are expected over Strathclyde and Lanarkshire and the Lothians.

Despite midsummer being just five days away, temperatures are well below those expected for the time of year.

A cooler June follows on from the hottest April on record and a wet May, when a quarter more rain than the monthly average fell.
