June 19, 2007

The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) has awarded the ASLA Medal to William B. Callaway, FASLA, chief executive officer of SWA Group (www.swagroup.com). The annual award, begun in 1971, is the highest honor the professional association bestows upon a landscape architect.

Founded in 1889, ASLA represents landscape architects and has more than 16,200 members and 48 chapters, representing all 50 states, U.S. territories and 42 countries worldwide. ASLA promotes the landscape architecture profession and advances the practice through advocacy, education, communication and fellowship.

Callaway, with more than 40 years of landscape architecture experience, joined SWA Group in 1967 as a draftsman, eventually becoming managing principal of the Sausalito office, president in 1988 and CEO in 1996. Due to his leadership, in 2005 SWA Group became the third company in ASLA history to receive the Landscape Architecture Firm Award.

“It is an incredible honor to receive the ASLA Medal from such a venerable institution,” Callaway said. “I’m thrilled and grateful that many of the projects I’ve been privileged to be a part of over the years have contributed to the welfare of the public and the environment.”

Some of these have included:

Civic projects — Arizona Center, Columbus City Hall, McCormick Place (Chicago), Village of Merrick Park (Coral Gables, FL), University of Washington-Husky Stadium

Corporate campuses — Electronic Arts, HP, Syntex Laboratories

Hospitality projects — Hyatt Regency Scottsdale (AZ), Desert Ridge (AZ)

Large-scale city projects — Filinvest Corporate City, Manila; Beijing Finance Center; Tuen Mun New Town (Hong Kong)

Mixed-use/residential communities — Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Magee Ranch (Danville, CA)

Parks/plazas — Barney Allis Plaza, (Kansas City, MO), Centennial Park (Atlanta), Shoreline Regional Park (Mountain View, CA), PPG Plaza (Pittsburgh)

Callaway received a Bachelor of Science degree in landscape architecture from the University of California, Berkeley; and a Master of Landscape Architecture degree from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. In addition to being an ASLA Fellow, Callaway is also a member of the Urban Land Institute.
